| “Drama is… voice and body to tell a story!” To bring a story to life on stage, the students are reminded to combine their speaking skills with actions and movement, to contribute to the fun of telling a story. From chants to charades, interesting and engaging vocal and physical activities have been employed in the Fun English Lessons, to develop students’ confidence and ability in dramatic performance. The theme of animals has been an accessible and interesting way to incorporate drama elements in the classroom. The J.3 Fun English classes have worked on performing a short drama based on a book called, ‘The Best Pet’, a story about a group of school children who have a pet competition. Similarly, the J.4 classes have been practising a play called ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. This time the competition is basketball, including two teams of animals competing to become the champions of the jungle! Hissing like a scary snake - or moving quickly like a cheetah –are just two examples of the laughter and enjoyment the students have found when performing like the characters from their readers. The Fun English Team ensure the students exercise vocally and physically to encourage them to re-tell the story in the most interesting and dramatic way. Each student is given a role in a script written by the Fun English Team to highlight the variety of skills they have developed in drama. We can already see that by using drama to tell a story, we have some star performing students at our school! |
